UPDATE ON WWCA ACTIVITIES
What follows is the first of what we hope will be regular updates to our members.

Recent association activities
The NDG Cyclist and Pedestrian Association (NDGCPA) and the Westmount Walking and Cycling Association(WWCA) have devoted much time over the past few months to improving the safety for cyclists through the Vendôme Danger Zone (VDZ) along the de Maisonneuve bike path from Prudhomme to Claremont in NDG. The VDZ is the only east-west commuting route for cyclists from the west and is used daily by over 2000 cyclists in summer. It is the most dangerous section of the 10 km long de Maisonneuve bike path and is the only section on which cycling are not protected by a concrete curb (Ville-Marie) or bollards (Westmount and NDG). We have been pushing for a protectedbike path through that zone.
Here are some of the things we have done:
· We met NDG Mayor Perez several times to convince him of the importance of this issue and to press him to address it promptly. He arranged meetings with Alain Tassé and Réal Ménard of the Montreal Executive Committeeplus members of the Active Transportation Division. We have exchanged over 15 emails with Mayor Perez on this subject.
· We succeeded in having Mayor Perez cycle the VDZ during rush-hour with us so he could understand the risks faced by cyclists.
· We prepared a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate the danger level to all the stakeholders.
· We developed a risk analysis tool to help quantify the high risk level to which cyclists are exposed.
· We organised a Bike Rally and PowerPoint presentation on May 15 to draw attention to this issues. This event received good media coverage. Two weeks later, we submitted a letter with signatures to the Mayor of Montrealurging prompt action.
· We have asked numerous questions at City and Borough Council meetings to draw attention to this issue.
· We have asked the STM to move three bus stops to permit the installation of a protected bike path.
· We met several times with Vélo Québec and the Montreal Bike Coalition to secure their support for this issue.
Making the VDZ safe depends on your support and help, so please encourage fellow cyclists to join our associations and please respond favorably when we ask for your help.
Enjoy biking.
